Waterlicht is a site-specific, large-scale light installation by acclaimed Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde. Translating to " water light," this immersive, public art event illuminated the power and poetry of water, while raising awareness of rising global sea levels. Waterlicht was a combination of LEDs and lenses creating an ever changing virtual flood, influenced by wind and rain. It was originally created as a site-specific artwork for the Dutch District Water Board Rijn & IJssel, Museumplein in Amsterdam. It drew more than 60,000 visitors in one night, and went on to be presented at Lumiere London, the United Nations in New York, Nuit Blanche Paris, UNESCO Schokland, the Afsluitdijk, Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Bentway Toronto, Jameel Arts Centre Dubai, Columbia University New York, and Fremantle Biennale Australia. Daan Roosegaarde remarked “Waterlicht is an inspiration for the future: should we build floating cities, how much power can we generate from the movement of water? Experience the vulnerability and the power of living with water.” THE OFFICE produced Waterlicht as part of Columbia University’s Year of Water, on the Public Plaza of Columbia's Lenfest Center for the Arts on October 22, 23, and 24, 2019."
